The history of the Kentucky Center in Louisville, USA, is a testament to the city’s commitment to arts and culture. The idea for the centre originated in the late 1960s when community leaders recognised the need for a dedicated venue to promote and showcase the performing arts in Kentucky. In 1969, the Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Center for the Arts Corporation, and construction began in 1976.

Finally, on 19 September 1983, the Kentucky Center opened its doors to the public with an inaugural ceremony attended by local dignitaries and arts enthusiasts. The Centre’s main building houses state-of-the-art performance spaces, including theatres, concert halls and rehearsal studios for a variety of artistic disciplines. The Kentucky Centre has three performance venues, all named after extraordinarily talented individuals: named after Robert S. Whitney, the incredible founding conductor of the Louisville Orchestra; named after the founder of the Kentucky Opera, Moritz von Bomhardt; named after Boyd Martin, a film and theatre critic.
Today, the centre is Louisville’s leading cultural institution, home to the wonders of & Juliet.
