The Hippodrome Theatre at France-Merrick Performing Arts Center in Baltimore, Maryland, is a historic theater that was built in 1914 by Thomas W. Lamb, one of the foremost theater architects of his time. The theater was designed as a movie palace that also showcased vaudeville performances and was the foremost vaudeville house in Baltimore. It was the largest theater in the United States south of Philadelphia when it opened. The Hippodrome Theatre has a seating capacity of 2,300. The theater was an integral part of the west side, Baltimore’s vibrant entertainment district, and was an anchor on the west side of Baltimore. The Hippodrome Theatre was closed in 1990 as the last movie theater in downtown Baltimore, and it was donated to the University of Maryland at Baltimore. The theater was renovated and reopened in 2004 as the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center, which is now an important venue for touring Broadway shows, dance, music, comedy, and other performing arts. The Hippodrome Theatre has hosted many popular shows, including Disney’s The Lion King, Wicked, Motown The Musical, and The Color Purple.
