Meeting &Juliet at the Fox Theater in Atlanta
The Fox Theatre in Atlanta has a rich history that dates back to 1929. Originally, it was intended to be Atlanta’s Yaarab Temple, the meeting hall for the Shriners, a part of the Masonic organization. However, due to the Great Depression, the Shriners found the project too expensive and formed an agreement with the movie magnate William Fox, who leased the auditorium as a theater. The theater opened on Christmas Day in 1929, just two months after the New York Stock Exchange crashed. Despite the grim economy, the Fox gave Atlanta a sprightly Christmas present. Since then, the Fox has been a prominent landmark in Atlanta, hosting a wide range of performances, including the Atlanta Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the Atlanta Ballet, and various other artists and events. The Fox fell into disrepair in the late 1960s, but thanks to the efforts of thousands of Atlanta’s citizens, the Fox was bought, refurbished, and re-opened. Today, it continues to be one of Atlanta’s premiere venues for live entertainment, hosting more than 150 performances a year, ranging from Broadway to rock concerts. And soon it will host a new grandiose musical & Juliet!
