Meet & Juliet at the Fox Theatre in ST. Louis
The construction of the Fox Theatre in St. Louis is initiated by William Fox, the founder of the film company bearing his name. Renowned architect C. Howard Crane, distinguished as a leading designer of movie palaces during that period, is tasked with the project. Beginning his architectural career in Detroit, Crane is revered for his expertise in crafting movie palaces renowned for their meticulous craftsmanship and outstanding acoustics. He employs a stylistic approach known as “Siamese-Byzantine,” drawing inspiration from various historical periods, to conceptualize the theatre’s design.
Nearly eighteen months before its grand opening, construction begins on the St. Louis Fox Theatre, overseen by Aronberg-Fried. Skilled artisans and craftsmen join the workforce later, contributing to the creation of the theatre’s lavish interior. The lobby of the Fox Theatre is meticulously designed, taking cues from ancient Indian religious architecture reminiscent of Siamese Byzantium.
Under the banner of Fox Associates, the company initiates a comprehensive restoration project lasting a year and costing $2 million, with the collaboration of Pantheon Construction Company. A deliberate choice is made to meticulously restore the theatre to its splendid state as closely as possible to how it appeared in 1929. During the restoration process, 7,300 yards of elephant carpet are woven, the art glass is faithfully replicated, and the 2,000-pound chandelier in the auditorium is restored to its former brilliance.
Over the years, the Fox Theatre has been a platform for showcasing film premieres, prominent stage performances, and exclusive events.
The restoration of this iconic movie palace is nationally acknowledged with a prestigious 1983 National Trust Honor Award, highlighting its significance and impact.
Today, you can enjoy its majesty with the incredibly romantic comedy performance AndJuliet.
